Toilet Time

Well if you know me, six months since my last post isn't that bad! Don't want to come across as sounding like one of those disability activists, who have nothing better to do than chain themselves to a bus but toilet time is an issue that has been niggling in the back of my mind for a while. If you have a neuromuscular condition (or other disability that limits your upper body strength) you will probably already know what I am going to have a little whinge about. At school I was scared stiff of asking if I could use the toilet at any time other than at the start of break, named by others now as 'toilet time'. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this term I will explain where it comes from. If any student asked to go to the toilet at any other time most support staff would give you the look, some even told you off - they need to have a break remember! Casino v Bingo - No competition!

After a knackering week at work including staying late on Friday to write reports I arrived home to have a quick turn around to go back out to the casino. To be honest it was the last thing I wanted to be doing, the activity that was in first place on my list was sleeping! We had had a tour around the casino after an evening at the bingo next door just before Christmas - and I have to admit I was impressed. After spending an evening with patronising but well meaning 'pat me on the head and then tick off numbers on a grid' people, I knew it wouldn't take much to make the night much more enjoyable at the casino - the fact that it was not bingo meant it had already won my vote for an evening out. So in comparison: Bingo You have to pay the same price even if you can't mark off all 6 books, and believe me SMA and bingo just do not go! Uniqueness

It has just occurred to me that I haven't mentioned that I have a neuromuscular condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2. I once knew a girl, who also had SMA, who had a page on her website called 'Uniqueness' where she mentioned her SMA hence the title of this blog post. I hope this now means that the topic choices in my previous blog posts make some sense! A bit more about my Uniqueness I have never walked as SMA means I have no strength in my muscles. I was labeled a s a lazy baby an d therefore wasn't diagnosed until I was age 3 and transfered for numerous tests at Great O rmo nd Street H ospital . My Family moved from London to West Sussex so that I would be able to be educated in a mainstream school as was recommended by my doctor - this was not the norm then.
